I am at the beginning of the Online Learning and Teaching Diploma (OLTD) program at Vancouver Island University. I am very interested to see where this course is going to lead me as I go through it for the next two years. Already I have seen growth within myself and I have learned things and had the opportunity to read blogs and articles on topics that I can relate to and gained tools and knowledge that I am already able to use with my students.
One of the big things for me so far has been the Pecha Kucha assignment. I found this assignment very fun and thought provoking and if I found it to be this way I am thinking that my students will feel the same and in that regard I would really enjoy assigning something similar to them. The personal intro that we completed at the beginning of our first course (you will see it on my webspace) is something else that I would really like to
bring into my classroom online. This year I had my students start with poetry in English and one of their first assignments was writing a poem introducing themselves; next year I think I would like to try an introduction that is turned into a word cloud and see how that works out.
I know that online learning and teaching is still relatively new in terms of being compared to ‘brick and mortar’ schools but I believe that it can be the front runner for 21st century learning if we are not afraid to broaden our ways of doing things and step outside the box a little bit. What will I / my teaching style look like at the end of this journey?
